Technical development and construction of the Elefy plastic chair
The Elefy chair, designed by Spanish designer Jaime Hayon for the Danish furniture brand &Tradition, is characterized by its soft, organic shape inspired by the body of an elephant. With its enveloping armrest shell and rounded geometry, the chair combines visual fullness and comfort with a friendly and modern expression.
In connection with the development of the product, I participated in the technical work, with a focus on realizing the design in a production-ready version. The work included measuring existing reference objects and building CAD models of the chair's main components, including the molded armrest shell and the supporting steel structure.
I designed both the frame and towers and developed and adapted assembly principles for stability, material use, and cross-material assembly.
FEM calculations and documentation on Elefy
In the further phase of the project, I performed FEM calculations (Finite Element Method) of the armrest shell and frame in order to validate the strength according to the requirements of EN 16139 Level 2, which applies to furniture in intensive public use.
The calculations formed the basis for dimensioning both the thickness of the shell and the steel profiles in the structure. Through the analyses, critical load zones were identified and handled through adjustments in the construction and material selection.
Finally, I prepared production documentation in the form of 2D drawings with detailed measurements, tolerances, and necessary information for manufacturing and quality assurance. The project illustrates the interaction between design and technical development - where aesthetic ambition and structural performance meet in a well-developed end product.
